Our trio triumph in speedcubing

A trio of St George's students have flexed their fingers alongside hundreds of the world’s sharpest minds at Australia’s largest speed-cubing competition.

Micah, Alex and Owen took part in the Rubik’s World Cubing Association Oceanic Championships which began at the Perth Convention and Exhibition Centre on Friday, drawing a crowd of more than 300 competitors and 1000 spectators.

Year 10 St George's student Micah said he was thrilled to have met some of the world's best cubers at the event, which featured 16 events including blindfolded and one-handed solves.

Micah said his best solve was a 3x3x3, completed in 17 seconds, and he also raced against the clock in a one-handed Rubik's challenge.

Fellow St George's students Alex, Year 8, and Owen, Year 9, caught up with Micah who made the pages of The West Australian (pictured).

Miss McGaw was a spectator at the event - while Head of Mathematics Miss Hewitt spotted the students on news website PerthNow (scroll the gallery above).

The World Cube Association governs competitions which are held all over the world most days of the year. Speedcubing Australia is a not-for-profit, volunteer-run organisation dedicated to supporting speedcubers. Competitions are open to everyone, regardless of their solving speed, and competitors range from age five to 85, with the majority between 10 and 20 years old.
