Classroom music, bands & lessons
Our Music Department boasts a range of bands, ensembles, production and song-writing groups as well as classroom music and individual lessons.
The Music Department is ‘open door,’ meaning students and staff alike can access the facilities in an inclusive and collaborative way.
Music classes are integrated with instrumental lessons, and co-curricular programs, meaning what is learnt in one area of music-making complements and enhances learning in other areas. In Music Education, what is learnt in class, instrumental lessons, co-curricular ensembles and bands, and informal music-making outside school should 'spill over' into each other, without compromising the unique characters of each.
In class we use:
- Informal learning and non-formal teaching
- Real-life tasks; lots of practical playing
- Teaching theory largely through practical music-making.
Our co-curricular music program allows students to develop a deeper understanding and appreciation of music while building social connections and having fun. We welcome all abilities.
Students can be involved in:
- Rock Bands in every year group
- Swing Band (including non-traditional swing instrumentation such as violin, viola, cello, clarinet and flute)
- Percussion Ensemble
- Electrocity Ensemble (combining contemporary electronics with traditional instruments)
- Jazz Ensemble
- Brasstermind (Brass)
- Flute Ensemble
- Rem!x (Music Technology and Production)
- Events Crew
- Chapel Band and Singers
- Choirs and Vocal Ensemble
